We may only be a few months into a new year, but the world of fashion is already dictating the trends we will be seeing, coveting and wearing this spring/summer. While it may not always be economical to buy an entire new wardrobe, updating your look with some of-the-moment makeup is a fool-proof way in which to be on trend. Indeed, the upcoming SS2013 season is the perfect excuse to give your makeup collection a fabulous revamp.
Senior makeup artist for global cosmetics giant MAC, Gisel Calvillo, says that four key trends have been identified – ‘Sig-nature’, ‘Nu-ance’, ‘Sci-chedelic’ and ‘Puri-tan’. Gisel sat down with Weekender to tell us what’s in, what’s out, and how to best replicate these key makeup trends at home.
Luminous glowing skin
“This season skin is luminous and glowing,” Gisel says. Indeed, Sig-nature is all about perfecting skin so it looks naturally polished, hydrated, and radiates health, like you have just had a facial. Think a light veil of effortless perfection with skin-identical pigments. “It’s almost bare skin, just cover where necessary and softly contour with sculpting creams to define cheekbones and shape the face. MAC’s Mineralize Collection is ideal for achieving this look,” Gisel says. Finish by adding highlights to the high planes of the face and a wash of neutral colour to the lips.
Soft metallic colours
Metallic eye colours are still de-rigueur, but this season it’s all about soft washes of colour – think beautiful soft pastel metallics inspired by nature, from seascapes to sunsets, such as fresh greens, turquoise and sunlit yellows. Nu-ance is all about making features pop with a soft wash of beautiful colour. Pair with beautiful glowing skin for a step up from the Sig-nature trend.
Dramatic liner and lips
The trend for dramatically lined eyes continues this season with Sci-chedelic, which sees a modern take on 60s inspired makeup. Hard, un-blended and confident graphic lines are paired with perfectly applied hyper-bright colours on lips such as electric orange and neon pink. “It’s a very experimental trend. Play around with shape and colour,” Gisel says. Indeed, for a truly fun and experimental look, try colour blocking on the lips with two different colours at once. For eyes, Gisel suggests MAC’s Fluidline gel liner in Blacktrack which she says stays put even in hot humid climates, coupled with lashings of MAC’s Haute & Naughty Lash mascara.
Caramel tones
The tanned look is back, or ‘Puri-tan’ as MAC is dubbing it. Think soft, warm, caramels and earth-toned, desert inspired palettes, coupled with soft highlights on the high planes of the face, all softly blended for an almost airbrushed effect. Puri-tan is about creating a soft golden glow in a modern and minimal manner, with tan-relevant shades to accent the eyes and add warmth to the face.
Strong brows
Keep your tweezers away for another season, strong brows still reign supreme. This season brows continue to look natural and full, not groomed to perfection. To achieve this look, groom brows in the most natural way, only plucking where absolutely necessary. If you’ve over plucked in the past, use a brow shadow or pencil to fill and define. Set with a clear brow gel for an effortless look.
